Our Mission

Our ultimate goal is to innovate and enhance:

  • Port Authorities
  • Management Authorities
  • The Scientific Community

with regards to the impacts of climate change on port infrastructure and shipping in general.

We aim to create research communities and innovation hubs in Greece and worldwide through the internationalization of our results.

The project’s research team consists of distinguished scientists with diverse backgrounds in Engineering, Environmental Science, Economics, and Computer Science to support all project activities.

The implementation and operation of ResPorts is expected to lead to the creation of innovative products.

The project addresses innovative issues such as:

  • Big Data Management and Analytics: This involves developing methods for collecting, storing, and analyzing large amounts of data.
  • Real-time exchange of scientific data, applications, and tools: This involves developing systems that allow scientists to share data and tools in real time.
  • Use of cloud computing services: This involves using cloud computing to store and process data.

A Data Center will be designed as an application of the Database as a Service (DaaS) model using the cloud computing infrastructure of the EN.I.R.I.S.S.T. Research Infrastructure, while the Decision Support System (DSS) will operate as a Platform as a Service (PaaS).

The scientific innovation of ResPorts is related to the development/use of advanced methodologies and tools of increased reliability:

  • Development of an integrated database of the economic/physical characteristics of Greek ports
  • Assessment and ranking of the vulnerability of Greek ports to Climate Changes
  • State-of-the-art climate risk/impact predictions
  • Appropriate multicriteria analysis
  • Use of advanced transportation models/indicators
  • Development of a specialized decision-making model and policy support methodologies

ResPorts aims to bring significant added value at the regional, national and international level.

At the regional level, ResPorts will support smart specialization by helping regional innovation, social cohesion and economic development.

At the national level, it will strengthen the knowledge for the survival and development of sustainable Greek industries in the new challenges of the European and global situation.

ResPorts supports research in ports, shipping and transport, which are necessary infrastructures for the development of Greek economic activity and tourism.

The implementation of the ResPorts project will improve the operational efficiency of ports in crisis situations, leading to reduced economic and environmental costs

The research project entitled “Strengthening Resilience for Greek Ports – ResPorts” is being implemented in the framework of the Program “Natural Environment & Innovative Actions 2022/ Priority Axis 3 “Research and Application”, with a total budget of 199,647.00 Euros. The project is funded by the Green Fund with the Beneficiary being the Department of Shipping and Business Services of the University of the Aegean (December 2022 – November 2024).

The research project is developed through six (6) Work Packages (WP). Specifically:

WP1: Coordination, Management and Governance Mechanism

WP2: Database Development and Identification of the Business Ecosystem of the Port Industry

WP3: Climate Risk Projections and Assessment of Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Ports

WP4: Development of Living Labs

WP5: Development of a Decision Support System (DSS) Platform

WP6: Exploitation of Research Results and Knowledge Dissemination
